Prerna Dhoop

Prerna Dhoop joined NALSAR in January 2016. She has previously worked as a Research Assistant at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) Kolkata and C. Edwin Baker Policy Fellow at the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Washington D.C.

She graduated from KIIT University School of Law, Bhubaneswar (BBA LL.B.) in 2013 and completed her Masters in Law (LL.M.) from Duke University School of Law, North Carolina USA in 2014. She specializes in International Human Rights, Comparative Constitutional Law and Legal Theory. At Duke, she was a participant at the International Human Rights Clinic and assisted Prof. Jayne Huckerby with a United Nations affiliated project aimed at developing basic principles on the right to an effective remedy for victims of human trafficking, especially women and children. In 2009, she along with her two colleagues at KIIT Law School raised the issue of the Right to Self-Identification for the Indian transgender community before the Chief Election Commissioner of India. Their concerted efforts to pursue their cause resulted in the Government of India’s official decision of assigning a distinct gender identity to the one million transgender population, in the Voter Identity cards.  

She enjoys playwriting, acting and directing stage performances. She speaks Spanish besides English, Hindi and Bengali. She likes keeping fit and engage in outdoor sports and activities.
