K.V.K. Santhy

Professor of Law

Director, Centre for Cyber Laws and Forensics

Professor K.V.K.Santhy began her journey at NALSAR in 2003, and over the past twenty three years, she has been teaching criminal law at leading law schools, focusing on research and writing in criminal law. Both substantive and procedural criminal law have remained at the core of her academic work, not just as subjects to be taught, but as living systems that demand constant questioning, critique, and reform.

Professor Santhy’s approach to teaching has always been anchored in analysis and critical engagement. She has consistently encouraged students to move beyond the text of the law and examine how it operates in practice, where it fails, and how it can be improved. Professor Santhy’s pedagogic and teaching philosophy has emphasised asking hard questions. In a system as strained as India’s criminal justice framework, she firmly believes such questioning  is not optional but a necessity. For Professor Santhy, the classroom is not merely a space for instruction, but a space for developing thoughtful, reform-oriented legal minds.

Research has been an integral part of Professor Santhy’s academic identity. She have authored more than thirty five publications, including contributions to international journals, engaging with a wide range of issues in criminal law and justice. Her work has also extended into collaborative and institutional research, where she has served as Coordinator for projects supported by national bodies such as UGC and BPRD, as well as international institutions including the Max Planck Institute, Freiburg, and the University of Bergen.

In recent years, Professor Santhy has expanded her research and writing focus to the evolving field of cyber law, with particular interest in cyber crimes and cyber security. Recognising the urgent need for legal understanding in this area, she has conducted training programmes for a diverse group of stakeholders, including students, police officers, judges, and prosecutors. These engagements have reinforced her belief that law must continuously adapt to technological change, and that legal education must keep pace with emerging challenges.

Professor Santhy’s current research interests lie at the intersection of the Information Technology Act and cyber crime, where she aim to contribute to a more coherent and effective legal framework. Across teaching, research, and training, her work remains guided by a single objective, to bridge the gap between law in books and law in action.
