The SRSWC Mentorship Program at NALSAR is a student-led initiative meant to make campus feel a little less overwhelming and a lot more supportive. Students are paired with mentors across 2nd to 5th years, who they can reach out to for guidance about academics, internships, moots, research opportunities, or even just figuring out how things work at NALSAR.

The process is fairly simple: a list of mentors is shared with the incoming batch, along with details about their interests and the languages they speak so that juniors can choose people they feel comfortable approaching. First-year students then submit a preference list, and based on this they are assigned a mentor. To encourage students to meet more people and not stay within just one small circle, each first year sometimes also get paired with another mentor outside their immediate preference.

Law school can sometimes feel competitive and isolating, especially in the beginning, so the program tries to create a space where juniors can ask questions freely, share concerns, and learn from people who have already gone through similar experiences. It is about building genuine connections across batches, making sure students feel comfortable seeking help, and  creating a culture where people look out for each other while navigating the ups and downs of law school.

Academic Mentorship Programme

The Academic Mentorship Programme is an initiative by the SBC Academic Committee aimed at supporting first-year students as they transition into law school at NALSAR. Under the programme, interested first-year students are paired with senior students who act as academic mentors.

The mentors assist mentees with navigating academic life at NALSAR, including clarifying course-related doubts, sharing study strategies, guiding exam preparation, and offering general advice on managing coursework and expectations in law school. The programme is designed to create an accessible and supportive environment for first-year students as they adapt to the academic rigour of the university.

A key feature of the programme is that mentees are able to indicate their preferred language of communication, ensuring that guidance remains comfortable and accessible. Participation in the programme is voluntary, and interested students register through a form circulated by the Committee within the specified deadline.

Moot Court Mentorship Programme

The Moot Court Committee (MCC) at NALSAR organises a Moot Mentorship Programme for first-year students to introduce them to the fundamentals of mooting and to cultivate a strong mooting culture within the university. Fifteen Moot Mentors are selected through a structured process. As per the policy, students from the penultimate year who are interested in mentoring first-year students are invited to apply by submitting details of their prior mooting experience along with a lesson plan for the programme. These applications are evaluated by the Faculty Coordinator of the Moot Mentorship Programme, following which the Moot Mentors are selected.

The selected mentors conduct intensive sessions that cover the various intricacies of mooting, including memorial drafting, legal research, case analysis, and oral pleadings. Each mentor is assigned a group of approximately 10–15 first-year students to ensure focused guidance and effective mentorship. In recognition of their contribution, the mentors are awarded three academic credits, while the first-year students receive two credits for actively participating in the programme.

In the subsequent semester, the first-year students gain hands-on mooting experience through participation in the Introductory Moot. In this exercise, students prepare memorials and argue their cases before experienced senior students acting as judges. Performance in the Intro Moot also contributes to the students’ academic grades. Through this structured mentorship and practical exposure, the Moot Mentorship Programme plays a significant role in promoting and strengthening the mooting culture at NALSAR.

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)  Mentorship Programme

The Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee (ADRC) at NALSAR University of Law runs a structured ADR Mentorship Programme as part of its commitment to building a strong and sustained ADR culture within the university. The programme connects senior students (3rd to 5th year) with juniors who are looking to develop their skills and understanding of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Mentors are selected through a review of their ADR CVs by an independent third-party reviewer appointed by the ADRC, ensuring that mentees receive guidance from students with proven experience and achievement in the field. The matching of mentors to mentees is handled by the ADRC through a randomised allotment process, ensuring fairness and impartiality. Each mentor conducts at least one structured session with their mentees, covering essential areas

such as:

  1. The fundamentals of ADR and the distinctions between mediation, negotiation and client counselling
  2. The process of writing strategy papers for ADR competitions
  3. NALSAR’s ADR Project Exemption and Reimbursement Policies
  4.  How to participate in national and international ADR competitions

Beyond these sessions, mentors remain available to their mentees for ongoing guidance and support throughout the academic year.

The ADRC provides full logistical support to mentors for conducting their sessions. In recognition of their dedication and contribution, mentors receive a formal certificate of acknowledgement from the ADRC upon successful completion of their responsibilities.
