Dr. Ambedkar Chair on Law and Social Inclusion

The Dr. Ambedkar Chair on Constitutional Law and Social Inclusion focuses on constitutional law and social justice. At the heart of its activities lies the ethos of equality, dignity, and work involving anti-discrimination, social inclusion, access to justice, and issues related to marginalised communities. It seeks to advance the constitutional ideas of an egalitarian society, liberty, and fraternity.

About the Centre

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair on Constitutional Law and Social Inclusion at NALSAR University of Law was established with the support of the Government of Telangana to advance research, teaching, and public engagement on constitutional values and social justice.

The Chair seeks to deepen engagement with questions of equality, dignity, and inclusion within the Indian constitutional framework. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary research and dialogue on issues concerning marginalised communities and structural inequalities.

Justice B.R. Gavai serves as the Chair Professor, with Dr. Anurag Bhaskar as the Adjunct Professor of Law and Director of the Chair.

Our Philosophy

The Chair is anchored in the constitutional vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, which places equality, liberty, and fraternity at the heart of India’s democratic project. It approaches constitutional law not merely as a legal framework, but as a transformative tool to address historical and continuing injustices.

The work of the Chair is guided by constitutional framework, emphasising substantive equality and the need to bridge the gap between constitutional promise and social reality.

Research and Collaboration

The Chair undertakes research on themes relating to constitutional law and social inclusion, including caste discrimination, access to justice, equality jurisprudence, and institutional reform.

It collaborates with academic institutions, civil society organisations, and policymakers to produce rigorous and impactful scholarship. The Chair also supports faculty and student-led research initiatives within the University.

Outreach and Engagement

The Chair actively engages with diverse stakeholders through lectures, workshops, etc. It aims to create accessible platforms for dialogue on constitutional values and social justice.

A key focus area is mentoring young scholars, particularly from marginalised communities, and supporting them in developing high-quality research. The Chair also proposes to undertake community-oriented initiatives, including legal awareness and dispute resolution efforts.

Publications

The Chair is committed to producing high-quality academic and policy-oriented publications. These include research papers, policy briefs, and edited volumes addressing contemporary constitutional questions and issues of social inclusion.
