ALPN Research Foundation, Bengaluru (ALPN)
ALPN Research Foundation is a not-for-profit independent think-tank that is working towards improving animal welfare across India. ALPN undertakes research on the intersection of animal welfare and public health, human rights, food safety, environment protection, human rights and climate resilience.
About the Project
NALSAR is partnering with ALPN to undertake a study that systematically assesses the current conditions and challenges to the welfare of broiler chickens in India. This study aims to evaluate the existing broiler chicken industry end-to-end, from farming systems and supply chains to market demand, regulatory context, and the broader stakeholder ecosystem. It will inform targeted intervention pathways in India.
Role Overview
We are hiring a Project Lead to oversee and conduct desk and field research, analysis, and report writing, and provide technical expertise with regard to broiler welfare in the context of India. This is a six-month-long, full-time research role with field research expected to take place for three months across approximately 60 farm visits in six states, plus slaughterhouses and meat shops. All fieldwork costs will be covered by the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead technical research and analysis on broiler farming systems in India – production practices, housing, breeds and genetics, feeding regimes, health management, and welfare conditions across different system types (backyard, contract, integrated, and commercial).
2. Design and execute a fieldwork plan covering approximately 60 farm visits across six states, plus slaughterhouses and meat retail points, assessing on-ground farming practices and welfare conditions firsthand.
3. Conduct and synthesise literature on broiler production and welfare in India.
4. Build relationships with farmers, veterinarians, and production-side stakeholders to support fieldwork and ongoing insight-gathering.
5. Assess the nature and extent of animal welfare across various farming systems, and evaluate the malleability of each system to welfare-improving interventions.
6. Provide subject-matter expertise on technical sections of the final report (industry overview, farming systems analysis) and contribute broiler-specific expertise to cross-cutting insights.
7. Identify and prioritise a list of potential welfare-focused interventions based on technical feasibility and likely adoption by relevant stakeholders.
8. Coordinate with the wider research team (who will lead economic, market, and regulatory analysis) to ensure technical findings feed into the overall report.
Qualifications
1. Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in broiler chicken production in India with a background in veterinary science, animal husbandry, poultry science, or a closely related technical field is strongly preferred.
2. Strong working knowledge of broiler farming systems in India (backyard, contract farming, integrated commercial operations) and common welfare issues within them.
3. Familiarity with animal welfare science and assessment frameworks as applied to broiler chickens.
4. Prior field experience visiting or working directly with poultry farms, ideally in rural or semi-urban India, would be an asset.
5. Fluency in English required; proficiency in regional languages would be an asset for fieldwork.
Preference will be given to candidates with
1. Strong technical/domain knowledge of poultry biology, husbandry, and production systems.
2. Strong research and analytical skills, and the ability to synthesise qualitative and quantitative information into clear, actionable insights.
3. Stakeholder engagement and interviewing skills, including with farmers, industry players, and government/regulatory entities.
4. Willingness and ability to travel extensively within India for fieldwork (across five states).
5. Project management skills and ability to work against timelines, coordinate fieldwork logistics, and manage competing priorities independently.
6. Cultural and contextual sensitivity for engaging with diverse stakeholders across Indian states.
