Law and Economics: Theoretical & Empirical Explorations

In recognition of the importance of analyzing policy, in general, and pertinent laws, in particular, from the perspective of welfare and economic efficiency, and furthermore, for the purpose of encouraging and disseminating research in the field of law and economics, NALSAR is organizing the “Law and Economics: Theoretical and Empirical Explorations” Conference on 19-20 Jan, 2019. Professor Satish K. Jain is an economist. Professor Shubhashis Gangopadhyay holds a P.hd in Economics from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA. He joined the Delhi Centre of the Indian Statistical Institute as a lecturer in 1983. He became a full Professor in 1991. He took over as founder-director of IDF in July 2002. He has published widely in journals on development economics, international trade, industrial organisation, regulatory economics and finance. He has also co-authored and co-edited a number of books in economics and finance. He is the Chief Editor of the Journal of Emerging Market Finance and is the President of two professional societies, the Society for Economic Research and Financial Analysis (SERFA) and the Society for the Promotion of Game Theory and its Applications (SPGTA). He has been on many government committees and consulted with various ministries and private business.

Speaker Bio: 
Dr. Ram Singh is currently a Professor at the Delhi School of Economics (since 2005). Prior to that he has held academic positions at Jawaharlal Nehru University (2003-2005). He has also held several visiting positions at Brown University, London School of Economics, University of Hamburg and K University – Leuven. He holds a PhD. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and Post-doctoral studies from Harvard University. He has received several prestigious fellowships in economics like the Fulbright Fellowship, Commonwealth fellowship, Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, Ronald Coase fellowship to name a few. He is the associate editor of the Indian Economic Review. Prof. Singh’s area of research is in Microeconomic theory with special interest in Law and Economics, Contract theory, Public-Private partnerships and Property rights. His research in economic analysis of law and its implications are published in top journals in the field, which includes His recent publications are in the Journal of Law and Economics, International Review of Law and Economics, American Law and Economics Review, European Journal of Law and Economics and Review of Law and Economics. Through his research and many newspaper articles and opinions, Prof. Singh has made an impression in the policy domain particularly in areas of land acquisition and property rights, taxation, public-private partnerships and contract laws in various domains.

He is a former Deputy director of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Prior to that he worked as Director at the India Development Foundation and Editor at Encyclopedia Britannica. Amir studied Electronics Engineering at Osmania University, Rural Management at IRMA and then got his PhD from the Jamia Millia Central University. Dr. Nishant Chadha is a development economist. He is currently a Fellow and Head – Projects at the India Development Foundation. His research interests are in political economy and the economics of education. A very recent strand of research is focused on studying the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code of India. His papers have been published in reputed national and international journals. He has a PhD and MA in economics from the University of British Columbia, Canada and a Bachelors in Technology from IIT Kanpur.

Speaker Bio: 
R. Gopal did his B.Sc. (Hons) Maths from Delhi University, 1981; LL. B. from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, 1985; and M.A. in Theory and Practice of Human Rights Law from University of Essex, England, 1996. He practice law based in Delhi beginning from October 1985, after getting enrolled with the Delhi Bar Council, and specialise in criminal law. As an advocate he took-up cases involving penal laws at various stages of remand, bail, charge, trial and appeal involving offences under the Indian Penal Code, 1860, and special penal laws including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and the Official Secrets Act, 1923. He represented and defended not only accused persons but also conducted prosecutions in complaint cases on behalf of victims and assisted the State in cases instituted upon police reports. Upon getting the British Chevening Scholarship in 1995, he successfully completed a post graduate course in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights at the Human Rights Centre, University of Essex. From the year 2000 onwards he spent more time in writing on criminal law. He prepared reports for reputed NGOs, and based on his writings, the Lawyers Collective Women’s Rights Initiative, released two publications in March 2014, “Locating the survivor in the Indian Criminal Justice System: Decoding the law “ and “Frequently asked questions: A guide for survivors of sexual violence”. He has authored “Crime against Women and Responsive Justice System, (Asia Law House, Hyderabad), 2014” and “A Handbook on Complaint Case: Practice and Procedure (Manupatra), 2008.” He also revised the five volume 20th edition of the Sohoni’s Code of Criminal Procedure. Presently he is working on an extensive commentary on the criminal procedural law in India.
